The Next Door
for Women in Recovery
SAGE Housing Inc. works closely with The Opioid Task Force of Franklin and Hampshire Counties and individuals in the recovery community to identify and create local, affordable sober living opportunities. SAGE has secured a property in Greenfield, MA, and is collaborating with GAAMHA to complete a six-bedroom house for women in early recovery. SAGE will continue to work with local advocates and the housing community to identify training opportunities and provide jobs to people in recovery.
Atlantic Gardens is a joint venture development of SAGE Housing Inc. and Karsten Companies of Weymouth, MA. It is an existing 32-unit property located near the North Quincy T Station in Quincy, MA, that consists of two bedroom, one bath apartments spread throughout eight buildings on a cul-de-sac campus. Improvements to the community include upgrading to efficiency standards, improvements to the infrastructure, including electrical and plumbing work, and site work to enhance curb appeal and the neighborhood visual factor.
Atlantic Gardens will provide work force housing opportunities for veterans and local residents, while increasing affordable housing stock to a region in desperate need of income restricted rental communities. The project will receive permanent financing from CBRE as a 223(F) HUD insured mortgage, while also receiving Work Force Housing funds from MassHousing and the City of Quincy.
Orchard Mews Playground
After six months of planning, on September 30, 2016, SAGE Housing Inc. and Housing Management Resources, Inc., together with partners KaBOOM!, 100 Black Men of Maryland, Play More B’More, and DAP Products Inc., built a new playground for the Baltimore family property, Orchard Mews. SAGE, HMR, the partners, and Orchard Mews volunteers worked collaboratively to clear away the existing structure and build the new one in its place. Local businesses, Panera Bread and Papa John’s Pizza, provided food for the volunteers. The new playground included a slide, rock climbing wall, swings, jungle gym and other activities to provide the children of Orchard Mews with healthy outdoor exercise. SAGE works to understand residents’ needs in order to strengthen and enrich the community in which they live.
Community Garden Project
Browns Woods Apartments
Browns Mills, New Jersey
SAGE Housing Inc., in conjunction with Browns Woods Apartments, began a community gardening program for the adult residents and children at the property in Browns Mills, NJ. SAGE provided funding for soil, plants, supplies and other resources for the program because it believes that a community garden is an effective and often joyful way for residents to engage in an ongoing activity that brings them outdoors and working together. SAGE is planning on continuing its partnership with Browns Woods Apartments to expand the gardening plots for the coming year.
Community Food Bank Program
Cedarbrook Park Apartments
Plainfield, New Jersey
In August 2017 SAGE Housing Inc., the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, and Cedarbrook Park Apartments in Plainfield, NJ, worked together to produce a program at the Cedarbrook property to help reduce the growing epidemic of senior citizens who lack access to good quality food.
Panera Food Program
Newport Harbor Apartments
Newport News, Virginia
In June 2017, SAGE Housing Inc., in conjunction with Newport Harbor Apartments and Panera Bread LLC., provided a summer food program for the children of the Newport Harbor Apartments community. The last bell of the school year for thousands of children can signal the end of their only regularly scheduled meals. Many children receive free or reduced-price meals or snacks from after school programs, however, summer vacation can mean an end to knowing where their next meal will come from. To help ensure that no child goes hungry, SAGE, and its partner, Panera Bread, were able to make a difference by providing free breakfast and lunch every day throughout the summer to the children of Newport Harbor Apartments.
Back to School Program
Liberty Hill Townhomes
In August 2015 SAGE Housing Inc. provided the children of Liberty Hill Townhomes with free backpacks filled with pens, pencils, notebooks and other items for them to use for the upcoming school year.
The Opioid Task Force
In September 2013, local community leaders came together to form The Opioid Task Force, which strives to ensure that Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region work together to help reduce opioid and heroin addiction, prevent overdose deaths, and improve the quality of life in the community.
Trish Leonard, a principal of SAGE Housing Inc., has been an active member of The Opioid Task Force Housing and Workforce Development Committee. As chair of the Housing Subcommittee, Ms. Leonard works to educate and facilitate collaboration between housing providers and to identify opportunities for sober housing. SAGE has sponsored the Firebird 5K to raise money for recovery housing since 2014 and has provided technical assistance and training to members of the recovery community on affordable housing and grant writing.
